Hello and welcome to my blog!
My name is Maaike, born and raised in the Netherlands. Truly Dutch you might say.
I study international communications and I play go.
I learned the rules of the game back in 2008, when I was 14 years old. I played for a few weeks, lost motivation and stopped playing. A few months later I picked it up again, played for 2 or 3 weeks, lost motivation again for a few months, after which I picked it up again. This cycle continued for a few years and I was too socially incapable to join a go club near my area (nor did I really have time for that), so I only played online and didn't really make any progress.
I created this blog in February 2013 in an effort to keep up with go by writing about it. Unfortunately that didn't work and once again I dropped go after a few weeks of playing.
Then I went to Malaysia for half a year, to do my internship. Now that I was on the other side of the world anyway, I decided to put my social in-capabilities aside and visited a weekly meeting of the Malaysian Weiqi Association. They welcomed me with open arms and didn't mind playing me, even though I was quite a bit weaker than most of them.
I realized how great the go-community actually is when you meet people face-to-face, but also online (why I didn't realize that sooner is beyond me).
After that I traveled a bit, settled down in Australia for a semester to study and then traveled some more. All along the way I have met great people, a lot of them go players from all over the world, and seen the most amazing things.
Now I'm back in the Netherlands and ready to tackle my challenge to become stronger again!
You can follow me on twitter at @My8ke, or look me up on KGS as 'NoRainbow' (I was 14 when I came up with that username. Don't judge me.). But I'm really not that interesting so I have no idea why you'd want that.
Anyway:
